Some of you might have received this issue in the mail and done a double-take. This is indeed the CMEA Bay Section's newsletter, the Tempo, but with a whole new look.
Why a new look? Well, I've been editor for 4 years now and I thought it was time for me to really lend my own personal style to the publication. Additionally, there hasn't been a new look in my 8 years in the Bay Section, so I thought it might just "be time". And what better way to celebrate 40 years of the Tempo than giving her a make-over! Plus our website has a whole new look (page 15) so I couldn't be left out!
I'd like to a moment to thank all the previous Tempo editors who have carried us into our fifth decade. Huge thanks and much gratitude go to Cheryl Yee Glass, Jon Nordgren, JoAnn Koobatian, Gary Glass, and Dale Wolford. I know that list partial, but finding the names of all those that came before me served to be a bit of challenge, so thanks too to those who created the Tempo and whose names have been lost to history (and if you're out there, let me know).
Although there is a cover and the layout of the articles is slightly different, I hope you will fi nd the Tempo to be just as informative and helpful as ever. We are so fortunate to have outstanding educators in this section who organize, plan, and implement so many experiences for our students; we truly are the envy of the state.
In this issue alone, we have not only our normal nuts-and-bolts for the year, but a survey of favorite festival pieces (page 19), helpful tips for jazz improvisation (page 5), information about the other newly made-over voice of the Bay Section (page 15), an introduction to our new Technology Representative (John Wilson of Chabot College, page 6), and much more.
I hope your summers have all been as fulfilling as mine has been. Playing with my two-and-a-half year and two-and-a-half month old daughters has given me renewed energy to get this redesigned Tempo into your hands to face the new school year through fresh eyes.
Enjoy the issue and have a great year!
