Flute: The most common flute used. Also known as the concert flute. It is in the key of C. This flute is usually made of metal, and has a cylindrical bore. | |||||||||

The Piccolo: The piccolo is the same as the concert flute in principle. However, its size of its hole id different, and breath support is similar to adding another octave to the C flute. There are very few occassions in which it has a solo, but is very commonly used in an orchestra. Made of wood and metal and has both conical and cylindrical bores. | |||||||||

Alto Flute: The Alto flute has a beautiful, mellow range, mostly used in its two lowest octaves. It requires a greater quanity of air than the concert flute. There is limited amount of solo literature however. It is in the key of G. It has a similar written range as the concert flute. Its tube is thicker and longer than the regualr flute. | |||||||||

Bass Flute: The bass flute sounds an octave lower than the concert flute.Can be difficult to play for many in its lowest octave because of the quanity of air needed and problems with adjusting the hole. It is in the key of C and like the alto flute, has a similar range as the concert flute. | |||||||||
